CLEVELAND, Ohio – Cuyahoga County property taxes are coming due in two weeks, and the treasury’s new website makes them easier than ever to pay.
Tax bills for the second half of 2021 were mailed out last week, and the deadline to pay is July 14. Otherwise, a 5% penalty will be assessed on any total past due from July 15-24.
A new payment portal aims to make it easier for residents to pay their bill online, providing revenue for local schools, cities, villages, townships, libraries, and various county-level services.
“We have worked to make it accessible and convenient,” County Spokeswoman Mary Louise Madigan said.
The portal walks residents through four steps:
1. Search your bills
In the Select Payment Type drop down menu, make sure “property tax” is selected. It should be the only option but is required in order to populate the field where you type in your parcel number.
Don’t know your parcel number? There is a hyperlinked tool that will take you to the county’s “MyPlace” website where you can search for the 8-digit number by the property owner’s name or address. Find it next to your name in the search bar or above your name in the “General Information” tab.
If you copy and paste the number into the portal search bar, be sure to include the dashes after the third and fifth digits. Click search.
2. Select payment
The next screen will have a summary of your property and the taxes owed, including any unpaid amount from the first half of the year. You must click “add to cart” to advance.
Click “continue,” you will be directed to a screen where you can put in your payment information. Then click continue.
If you own multiple properties, you will have to complete this process for each one. Those who wish to pay the bills due on all their properties in one transaction, must either pay in person at the Cuyahoga County Administrative building, 2079 E. 9th St, or mail in a check with each bill’s remittance stub.
3. Review and submit
Residents will then have an opportunity to review all their information to make sure they’ve selected the right property and are using the correct payment information. Use the “back” button to make edits or click “continue” to advance.
At this point, residents will be asked to select which amount they intend to pay: the full amount owed, which could include any delinquent taxes from the first half of the year’s bill; the current amount, which would only include the amount due for the second half of the year; or they can enter whatever amount they plan to pay at that time.
4. Confirmation and receipt
Once all the information has been confirmed, residents will receive a receipt that they can print for their records.
Online isn’t the only way residents can pay their tax bills, however. Other options include:
Taxpayers unable to make full payment of their property taxes can call 216-443-7420 to make an appointment with the Treasury Department to discuss payment arrangements.
